350 Climate Change March

Posted by Jessica Jones at Oct 23, 2009 12:30 AM |

What is the 350 International Day of Climate Change? Why are SRJC students marching on that day? And should you join them?

350 Climate Change March

What is the bottom line question?

We have all seen how public outcry and demonstrations are the fuel for political change.

Over the decades protestors have cried out on numerous issues of equality, rights, and injustices throughout the world.  What we haven't yet seen is a movement addressing Climate Change.

Bill Mckibben, famous author and environmentalist, has called for Saturday, October 24th, to be the 350 International Day of Climate Change. The goal is to bring global unity on the issue of climate change and the need for climate change legislation.

On October 24th at 3pm on the SRJC campus, I will lead my first march.  It's something which I am both nervous and excited about all at the same time.

And so on this day of climate change awareness students from Santa Rosa Junior College will march to spread awareness of the 350 campaign, and to spread awareness of their passion and vigor to combat climate change. This will be one of the first actions of the newly created SRJC Green Team:

In sum, the bottom line question we must ask ourselves is are we proud of ourselves at the end of the day, have we stood up for our opinions, shown due respect, shown compassion?  That is something I ask myself every night, and no matter how many people show for the march, whether it be 2 or 30 or 400 people, the real thing that matters is that we spoke up, showed courage and took action!
