California State Budget Crisis Not Caused by the Recession

Is California's budget crisis a consequence of the recession? Are such analyses short-sighted? Or worse? According to this commentary, they're part of a trend going back to 1993, during which wages and unions have been undermined to protect corporate profits.

California State Budget Crisis Not Caused by the Recession

What is the cause of California's budget crisis?

The budget crisis in California has been artificially created by cutting taxes on the wealthiest people and corporations. The current “crisis” is a shock and awe process designed to undermine wages and unions in the state and force labor concessions to protect corporate profits.

According to the California Budget Project, tax cuts enacted in California since 1993 cost the state $11.3 billion dollars annually.  Had the state continued taxing corporations and the wealthy at rates equal to those fifteen years ago we would not have a budget crisis today.

Half of all state revenue comes from personal income taxes paid by working people, and another third comes from sales and use taxes. The result is that as a percent of income, taxes hit the lower paid workers the hardest.  Corporations only pay for about 1/10th of the state budget. The rest of us are bailing out the rich by accepting massive budget cuts at a time when less spending will only exacerbate the economic situation.

Unions and working people need to say no to massive state budget cuts, and fight for every service and job possible.

biz tax not the reason for budget issues

unions in this state are prevalent in only a few areas, teachers, cars(minimal), government and in the country only about 10% are in unions down from over 20% 20 years ago and for good reason...in most cases they provide terrible value for the dollar and run systems that are broken in a large part because of them. When an employee is paid simply on seniority and not on performance you will never have a good company or government. As well when a job that a person can be trained for in less than 1 day is paid at absurd rates of $80/hr such as those paid by GM(no matter the seniority) you also have a broken and doomed business. Businesses in this state are being driven out due to over taxation and over regulation. I know, I just filled out paperwork for city, county, state and federal to get a biz started in this state. Each had the authority to arbitrarily reject my permit and each charged me money for my licenses and permits. This state has plenty of money, they have terribly corrupt politicians who actually make the US Congress look good. The best thing this state could do is to elimnate business taxes and make it easy to do business here to enlarge the jobs/tax base....I've lived here for 26 years and manufacuring has been leaving the state ever since I came. I will be moving my business eventually to Nevada and my own home address to my second home in Florida for tax purposes.
