International Volunteerism: a Challenging Career during Retirement
Retirement in Sonoma County in 1995 presented opportunities for a new career for our speaker - volunteer work. Deborah Johnson, M.D., has lectured in oncology for several organizations and government programs in major cities in the U.S., Europe, China, Russia, and Turkey and she has worked in medical clinics in Viet Nam, Poland, Ecuador, Thailand, Brazil, and Ghana. Locally Deborah teaches ESL and was vice president of WACSC. Dr. Johnson will discuss her recent adventures in Ecuador and Ghana.

Speaker: Deborah Johnson, M.D., current vice-president of the World
Affairs Council, who, after teaching residents and medical students at
UCSF and Moffit Hospital for 26 years, and chairing the Dept. of
Oncology at Kaiser Permenente, Redwood City, retired to Sonoma in 1995,
and began a new career with many governmental and international
non-profit societies pursuing oncology around the world. For instance,
under the U. S. State Dept sponsorship of American Women for
International Understanding, she lectured in Russia, Turkey, and
Greece, and under the European Cancer Society in London, Stockholm, and
Budapest. Through Global Volunteers and Handclasp, she worked in
clinics in Poland, Ecuador, Vietnam, Thailand, Brazil, and Ghana. Dr.
Johnson will discuss her recent adventures, emphasizing opportunities
for volunteering locally and internationally.
